The National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS), which began in 1987, is an initiative of the Australian Government administered by Diabetes Australia. The NDSS delivers diabetes-related products at subsidised prices and provides information and support services to people with diabetes. Registration is free and open to all Australians diagnosed with diabetes.

What is incontinence?
Incontinence, also known as bladder weakness, is any accidental or involuntary loss of urine from the bladder or bowel motion, faeces or wind from the bowel.
The severity ranges from ‘just a small leak’ to complete loss of bladder or bowel control.
How common is incontinence?
Approximately 4 million Australians have bladder control problems some time in their life.
Women – 37% of Australian women suffer from incontinence, with many experiencing problems after childbirth and menopause.
Men – 14% of Australian males experience incontinence. Bladder weakness amongst men is commonly due to enlargement of the prostate or as a result of prostate surgery.
Types of incontinence
- Stress incontinence is when urine leakage occurs as a result of sudden physical exertion, such as coughing, sneezing or laughing.
- Urge incontinence is urine leakage as a result of a sudden and strong need to urinate when you are unable to get to a toilet in time.
- Overflow incontinence is the inability to fully empty the bladder, causing leakage at inappropriate times.
- Functional incontinence is the inability to use or get to the toilet due to obstacles, physical or mental disability.
Did you know about the Continence Aids Payment Scheme?
- The CAPS is an Australian Government Scheme that provides a payment to assist eligible people who have permanent and severe incontinence to meet some of the costs of their incontinence products.
- The CAPS Payment for 2013-14 is up to $533.50 and is indexed annually.
- You can even nominate this payment to be made to your local Community Pharmacy so that you can draw down on it as you make your purchases as required.
